In May, we launched our first annual Teacher and School Nurse Appreciation Month to express our gratitude to the unsung heroes of the community. Teachers and school nurses play a vital role in students' lives, often stepping in to provide essential care and support while children are away from their parents.

How You Can Nominate a Teacher or School Nurse

We invite you to nominate a teacher or school nurse you believe deserves recognition for their hard work and commitment. Your nominations will help us identify exceptional individuals who truly embody the spirit of the Barbara J Birks Above & Beyond Award. 

Each nomination should include a detailed description of the nominee's contributions and, if available, supporting documents or testimonials.

• Nomination Dates: August 1 - October 4, 2024

• Review of Nominations: October 7 - October 25, 2024

• Award Winner Contacted: October 28, 2024

• Public Announcement of Awardee: Week of November 4, 2024

Eligibility Criteria and Selection Process

To be eligible for the Barbara J Birks Above & Beyond Award, nominees must currently be teachers or school nurses in an Arizona school and demonstrate exemplary performance. 

School staff, students, parents, or community members who have witnessed the positive impact of the teachers' or school nurses' work can make nominations. Teachers or nurses can also nominate themselves for the award.

The selection process will involve a careful evaluation of the nominee's achievements, including:

1. How long has the nominee been in their current role?

2. How long has the nominee worked for the school they currently are affiliated with?

3. Examples of how the nominee has proactively created and nurtured a positive, inclusive, and supportive student environment.

4. Some inspiring stories or testimonials from students, parents, or colleagues exemplify the nominee's remarkable devotion to their work.

5. Additional details on how the nominee has gone above and beyond the call of duty, surpassing traditional expectations of their role

A panel will evaluate the nominations and select the deserving Barbara J Birks Above & Beyond Award recipient.

Recognition and Rewards

The recipient of the Barbara J Birks Above & Beyond Award will be recognized for their outstanding contributions during a special ceremony held in their honor. 

The award will include:

1. A certificate highlighting their achievements and dedication.

2. A monetary award of $500 can be used for personal use or to further support the teacher or nurse's efforts in providing exceptional healthcare and services within the school community.

3. Public recognition and media exposure to showcase the recipient's impact and inspire others in the field.
