How Donated Bras Support Students Through The Student HUB

The Student HUB exists to help undo the barriers that can stand between students and their success. Sometimes those barriers are big—housing instability, financial hardship, or access to behavioral health services. Other times, they’re everyday needs like having food, clean clothing, or a bra that fits.

Through its resource centers across Arizona, The Student HUB works to make sure students have somewhere to turn for those needs. And through its partnership with The Undie Chest, bras and underwear can become another resource available to help students feel supported, comfortable, and ready for what comes next.

About The Student HUB

HUB stands for Help Undoing Barriers, a name that says a lot about the organization’s approach. Students can visit its physical resource centers for food, clothing, hygiene products, laundry services, technology, Wi-Fi, and other basic necessities. The team also helps connect students with longer-term resources related to housing, behavioral health, employment, counseling, and more.

The Student HUB serves approximately 3,000 people each year, with young adults ages 18–25 representing the largest group they support. About 70% of the people they serve live below the federal poverty line, and approximately 70% experience homelessness or housing instability.

For a student trying to stay on track with school, having these resources in one place can make a meaningful difference. It means there are people looking beyond the classroom and asking an equally important question: What does this student need in order to keep moving forward?

When a Student Simply Needs a Bra

Bras and underwear are part of that answer.

The Student HUB often receives clothing for students, but undergarments can be much harder to keep stocked in the right sizes. During a conversation with The Undie Chest, Resource Specialist Rachel Dluhy recalled a student coming in while experiencing housing instability and saying simply, “I really need a bra.”

It’s an everyday item many of us may not give much thought to until we don’t have one.

The Student HUB says sports bras are currently one of its greatest undergarment needs, particularly in standard sizes XS–XL. The organization estimates it could use approximately 500 bras and underwear items each year to fully support the people it serves.

Access to those essentials helps The Student HUB do what it does best: surround students with practical resources that support their well-being while they work toward their educational and personal goals.

How Your Donations Reach Students

This is where The Undie Chest community becomes part of the story.

When bras are donated to The Undie Chest, wearable items that meet our standards for a second life can be sorted and prepared for redistribution. Those items are then made available to nonprofit partners serving people who need them.

For The Student HUB, that means bras and underwear can become part of the essential resources its team places directly into students’ hands.

A bra donated by one person can eventually become the bra a student reaches for before going to class, heading to work, meeting with a counselor, or simply starting another day.

That connection is what makes giving these items so meaningful. You may no longer need something in your drawer, but it may still be exactly what someone else needs.

Giving Bras a Second Life Through Giving

At The Undie Chest, we believe access to proper undergarments is about more than clothing. It’s about comfort, confidence, choice, and dignity.

That’s especially important for bras. People come in different sizes, have different preferences, and need different styles for their bodies and their everyday lives. Providing a range of wearable bras gives nonprofit partners more opportunity to match the right item with the right person.

Items that meet our redistribution standards are prioritized for a second life in the community. Garments that are not appropriate to give to someone else are kept separate from donation inventory so that only suitable items are distributed to the people our nonprofit partners serve.

That simple standard matters: what we give should always reflect the same dignity and care we would want for ourselves.

The Ripple Effect of Meeting One Need

A bra can be one small but meaningful piece of a much bigger support system.

For a student, having the right undergarments can mean feeling more comfortable getting dressed for school, work, graduation, or whatever the day holds. Meeting that need can help them feel supported and take one more step toward the future they’re working for.

For The Student HUB, donated bras and underwear also mean resources that might otherwise have to be purchased can be directed toward the many other needs students bring through their doors. The organization estimates it could spend approximately $2,000 each year purchasing these essentials without donated support.

That’s the ripple effect we love to see. One person gives. The Undie Chest helps connect that generosity with a community partner. The nonprofit puts the item directly into the hands of someone who needs it. And one more basic need is met.
