Who Is Looking Out for the Men Who Are Struggling?

We've all heard the familiar messages.

Be strong. Take care of your family. Work hard. Figure it out.

For generations, many men have grown up hearing that being a provider means handling whatever life throws their way.

But what happens when life becomes more than one person can handle?

What happens when a father loses his job? When a veteran has nowhere to call home? When a man who has spent years caring for others suddenly needs someone to care about him?

Who's looking out for the men who are struggling?

It's a question worth asking, especially during Men's Health Awareness Month.

The Numbers Tell Us Something Important

According to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, men accounted for approximately 60% of people experiencing homelessness in the United States during the 2024 point-in-time count.

That's a significant number of men facing housing instability.

Behind those numbers are individuals with different stories, backgrounds, and circumstances.

Some are fathers. Some are veterans. Some are young adults trying to find their footing. Others are older men who never imagined they would experience homelessness.

We can't assume we know someone's story simply because of their circumstances.

But we can recognize that everyone has basic needs.

When You're Struggling, Even the Smallest Things Matter

Think about your morning routine.

You wake up, take a shower, put on clean underwear, get dressed, and start your day.

Now imagine trying to follow that routine without reliable access to a shower, clean clothes, or a safe place to sleep.

For someone experiencing homelessness, taking care of personal hygiene can become a daily challenge.

And while community organizations work hard to provide food, shelter, and other critical services, everyday items like new underwear can still be hard to access.

These are the things we don't always think about when organizing donation drives.

But they're essential to daily comfort and personal dignity.

Why Men's Health Is More Than a Medical Appointment

During Men's Health Awareness Month, we often encourage men to schedule physicals, discuss prostate cancer screenings, and pay attention to their mental health.

Those are important conversations.

But think about the man trying to find a safe place to sleep tonight.

Or the father who is stretching every dollar to make sure his children have what they need.

For him, purchasing new underwear may fall to the bottom of the list.

Not because it isn't important, but because other needs are more urgent.

That's why addressing basic necessities should be part of the broader conversation about men's health.

What We're Doing at The Undie Chest

At The Undie Chest, we believe no one should have to go without new underwear simply because they're experiencing financial hardship.

Through our Undie Power Program, we work with shelters and nonprofit partners that serve vulnerable adults.

Our role is to help make new underwear and other essential undergarments available to the organizations already working with people in need.

We're not solving every challenge these individuals face.

But we are helping address a basic need that deserves more attention.

And sometimes that's where meaningful support begins.

Let's Change the Conversation

Here's something to think about the next time you're organizing a clothing drive.

Are men's underwear and undershirts on the list?

Are you asking local shelters what sizes they need?

Are you considering the needs of men who may not feel comfortable asking for help?

And are you reminding the men in your own life that needing support doesn't make them any less deserving of respect?

We can do better when we start asking different questions.

A Simple Way to Show You Care

This November, we're encouraging individuals, families, and businesses to include men in their efforts to address underwear insecurity.

You can donate new men's underwear, organize a collection, or support the organizations serving men experiencing hardship.

And perhaps most importantly, you can help change how we talk about men who need assistance.

Because everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, regardless of their circumstances.

Thank you for helping us make sure men aren't overlooked.

Remember, dignity starts with feeling good undie-neath.
